TL;DR:
baby supplies disappear faster than almost anything else during outreach. Diapers run out immediately, wipes somehow vanish overnight, and if you underestimate formula or baby bottles everybody notices fast.
Baby stuff becomes stressful really quick once kids are involved.
Especially shelters.
Because adults can usually “make things work” for awhile even when supplies low but babies can’t really. If diapers run out they run out. Nothing flexible about it.
And alot of times donations come in random.
Somebody donates newborn diapers.
Another person drops off toddler clothes only.
Then suddenly there’s almost nothing for the middle sizes everybody actually needs most.
Happens constantly honestly.
Wipes go faster than people expect
I swear wipes disappear faster than almost everything.
Doesn’t even matter how many cases show up.
People use them for babies obviously but also cleaning bottles, hands, tables, strollers, basically everything once families are staying somewhere temporarily.
One women’s shelter I remember thought they had enough inventory for almost two months.
Then one week later they already opening backup cases because they underestimated how many families arrived at once.
That happens alot with resettlement programs too.
Everything changes fast overnight.
Diaper sizing always gets weird
There’s usually too many newborn sizes and not enough larger baby sizes.
Not always but alot of the time.
Size 4 and 5 diapers disappear ridiculously fast once toddlers involved.
Then volunteers start mixing brands together trying make remaining inventory stretch longer.
You see half-open boxes everywhere after awhile honestly.
And if somebody orders the really cheap diapers trying save money sometimes parents just won’t use them because leaks become a problem almost immediately.
Then now those boxes just sit there untouched.
Simple things become huge problems when they run out
Baby bottles.
Formula.
Pacifiers.
Baby soap.
People don’t realize how fast those become urgent.
Especially overnight.
A shelter can survive awhile missing alot of things honestly but once baby supplies start getting low the pressure changes completely.
Everybody starts scrambling faster.
And formula especially gets stressful because babies can’t just switch randomly sometimes. So shelters usually try keeping extra inventory around even if storage gets tight.
The smaller travel-size stuff actually helps alot
Travel baby shampoo.
Small wipe packs.
Little hygiene kits for moms with babies.
Those usually move quickly because families can carry them easier while moving between places or appointments or temporary housing.
Big bulk containers still needed obviously but smaller items end up getting used constantly too.
Especially during intake days.
Neutral basics usually work best
Simple baby blankets.
Plain onesies.
Basic bottles.
Nothing fancy really.
People overthink baby donations sometimes trying making everything cute or themed and honestly most shelters just need reliable basics that don’t run out immediately.
That’s mostly it.
Especially once more families start arriving than expected because then inventory starts disappearing fast all at once and baby supplies somehow always become the first thing everybody worried about.
