TL;DR:
Bulk shoes get weird fast honestly. Sizes disappear, random colors sit forever, and the really cheap pairs usually end up being ordered twice because they don’t last. Simple stuff works better most of the time.
People think the hard part is getting donations.
It’s not really.
It’s usually figuring out what people will actually wear after you ordered way too much of something already sitting in boxes.
Shoes are one of those things.
Socks too obviously but shoes become a bigger issue because once sizing gets messed up the whole thing starts becoming annoying for everybody helping at the event.
You’ll see volunteers opening boxes on the floor digging through pairs trying to find a size 11 while there’s like forty size 6s nobody is touching.
Happens constantly.
The cheap stuff sometimes looks good until people wear it
A lot of bulk footwear online honestly looks almost identical in photos.
Then the shipment comes.
One pair feels fine. Another feels paper thin. Sometimes the sizes make absolutely no sense either. A men’s 10 fitting smaller than an 8 somehow.
Then people start returning asking for another pair and now inventory is all messed up.
I remember one outreach event where they ordered really cheap slides because the pricing looked unbelievable compared to everything else.
At first everyone thought it was a good deal.
Then after maybe a week or two people started saying the bottoms were splitting apart. Some pairs were literally bending sideways while walking.
So now instead of saving money they had volunteers trying to replace footwear in the middle of winter which was honestly worse.
Neutral colors always disappear first
Black.
Gray.
Dark blue.
Those go first almost every time.
The bright neon stuff usually stays sitting there longer unless it’s for little kids maybe. Even then not always.
Simple athletic shoes move fast too because people can wear them with anything. Shelters, schools, everyday use, doesn’t matter really.
Slides disappear faster than people think also.
Especially inside shelters.
People use them for showers, sleeping areas, walking around temporary housing. Stuff like that.
Nobody really talks about that beforehand but once you see a few programs happen you notice it.
Sizes get messed up every single time
I don’t know why this keeps happening honestly.
Someone always overorders smaller sizes.
Then halfway through distribution there’s almost nothing left for larger adults and everybody starts trying to “make it work.”
Usually safer keeping more middle sizes and larger men’s sizes than you think you need.
Not saying only order those obviously.
Just saying what usually disappears first.
Kids sizes can vanish fast too if schools or family shelters are involved. Especially before colder weather starts hitting.
Simple usually wins
People try making these orders perfect sometimes.
Matching styles. Different designs. Fancy packaging.
Then eventually everybody kinda realizes people mostly care if the shoes are comfortable enough and hold together longer than a few days.
That’s really the main thing.
Especially when outreach programs are already trying to buy blankets, hygiene kits, socks, backpacks, winter stuff, food supplies all at the same time and budgets are getting stretched all over the place.
Footwear somehow always runs lower than expected too.
Not really sure why but it does.
